Doctors

Mr. Frank Kinsella

Mr. Kinsella was the Senior Ophthalmic Surgeon in University College Hospital, Galway from 1993-2023 and the clinical lecturer in ophthalmology in the National University of Ireland, Galway. He now works exclusively in the Western Eye Clinic.

Prior to taking up his Galway appointment, Mr. Kinsella spent a number of years training in general medicine before starting his career in ophthalmic surgery in the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, Dublin. Subsequent to that he spent two years in Glasgow where he developed a special interest in ocular oncology followed by two years in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff where he had extensive exposure to lacrimal and anterior segment surgery. This was followed by a fellowship in retinal surgery in the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and finally a fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery in Moorefields Eye Hospital, London.

Awards for his work in laser eye surgery:

2023 Board Certified Fellow in the WCRS (World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences)

Awarded the designation of a fellow in recognition for knowledge, achievement, expertise, and commitment to the advancement of refractive surgery. As of 2024, only one other laser surgeon in Ireland has received this award.

Ms. Clare Gillespie

Clare qualified with a BSc (Hons) Orthoptics from the University of Liverpool in 2016. A few months later she began working in Galway in both public and private practices including the Western Eye Clinic, University Hospital Galway and various Community Clinics. She gained a certificate in Medical Retina from the University of Ulster and is a regular attendee of the annual conference by the Irish College of Ophthalmologists and the Adare Retinal Meeting. She has been running the Refractive Clinic since 2016.

Ms. Aisling Prior Clinical Optometrist

Experienced Optometrist with a history of working in the health sector, gaining Lanarkshire Eye Health Network Service (LENS) qualifications, and Northgate diabetic screening program accreditations. Skilled in Clinical Research, Ocular Disease, and Ophthalmology with an MA in Clinical Ophthalmology and Vision research. Strong healthcare services skills with a Post Grad in Independent Prescribing from Glasgow Caledonian University. Part-time assistant lecturer and supervisor in TUD.

Ms. Fiona O' Dell Clinical Optometrist

Fiona qualified from DIT with BSc (Hons) Optometry in 2009. She worked in a cataract & laser clinic in the UK for some years before returning home. Since returning to Ireland she has worked in a variety of optical practices in the West. She completed her Professional Certificate in the Medical Retina in 2016 and also a certificate in minor eye conditions from University of Ulster in 2018. Fiona joined the team in October 2022 and her primary role within the practice is examining patients both pre and post treatment for laser and cataract surgeries.
